RedEmber Describes Good Night, Knight’s Mechanics and Humor
For the past two years, indie developer RedEmber has been creating a robust dungeon crawler by the name of Good Night, Knight. The title will put players in the shoes of a wondering knight as he explores dungeons filled with odd and interesting creatures.
Alongside constant updates via the game’s development blog, Good Night, Knight has been seen all over Reddit thanks to its unique style and hilarious bits of comedy.
The Nerd Stash had the opportunity to chat with RedEmber earlier this month, where we spoke about the games influences, humor, and the trials of being a solo developer for the first two years.
Any particular reason for the title Good Night, Knight?
Yeah! It’s called that because in the end it will be revealed that the knight was actually just sleeping and the entire adventure was just a dream. Just kidding!
There is a story reason though (no spoilers!), there are also game-mechanic reasons: The tent is a place of respite where the player may rest, prepare food, brew potions, change equipment, as well as rest and have experience be distributed at the bed. And since the only way to regain lost health is through resting, the sight of a tent room should be quite a relief in contrast to the previous combat rooms the player conquered to get there.
Resting is a key mechanic in Good Night, Knight similar to bonfires in Souls games, but instead of only having the enemies reset like in Dark Souls, the whole world is regenerated after resting.
How important is humor in Good Night, Knight?
As important as having solid gameplay is having a compelling story. A lot of thought is being put into making the story as fun and interesting as the gameplay! Plus it is incredibly fun to create unique little events where the unexpected happens for players to find out.
You are solo developer correct? How difficult has it been and what are the challenges of working alone?
For the past two years, I had been developing solo, yes. Now thanks to amazing supporters we are able to develop faster with the help of a great artist (Joe Hanna)!
It is quite a hard task, but also unbelievably rewarding! The main challenge is the sheer amount of time it takes.
Currently, there is no release date set for Good Night, Knight, but Patreon subscribers can play the pre-alpha now!
